Safety Leadership Development & Training
LTP Consulting has worked to establish a set of tools and learning interventions to support safety leadership capability uplift.
Safety Leadership Development & Training
In a recent Health and Safety audit, it was found that the client's organisation had a number of key areas that required immediate attention for them to move towards being compliant with the ISO45001 Standard.
A HSW Rectification Plan was developed and a LTP Consulting ran a series of 'Visible and Capable HSW Leader' workshops across the organisation. The objective of each workshop was to allow the leaders of the organisation to gain an understanding of their 'legal obligation' and what “good looks like” within the context of a Safety-First culture.
A business with a strong Safety-First culture has:
-
Visible, capable and engaged leadership
-
SMART OHSW objectives are embedded in individual performance plans
-
Reports hazards – physical and psychological (including near misses)
-
Conducts risk assessments
-
Communicates hazards and risks to its employees / contractors / visitors
-
Employees are aware of the control measures to prevent an injury
-
Risk assessment is integrated into all systems
-
Learns to establish a ‘Safety-First' culture
-
A ‘Healthy Workplace’ that’s supports workplace culture, enhancing health and wellbeing and delivers improved outcomes
Leaders positioned the organisation on a Safety Journey Continuum to determine the current state. Participants then undertook a visionary exercise to place them in 2020. This set the context that the organisation had achieved their vision of enabling a ‘Safety-First' culture and had embedded Visible and Capable HSW Leaders across the organisation.
Participants were then introduced to the Korn Ferry Leadership Architect™ - (KFLA™) competency framework and gained an understanding how competencies are observable, measurable sets of skills and behaviours that contribute to workplace effectiveness and career success. Competencies determine how we do our jobs, how we accomplish goals and that their main purpose is to focus on development.
Leaders undertook a group discussion and formed the preliminary profile question: What competencies do people in the role of a Visible and Capable OHSW Leader need to effectively support the organisation?
They then conducted a 3-way Card Sort using the KFLA™ competency framework, to determine the competencies people in the role of a Visible and Capable HSW Leader would need to effectively support the business, to allow the organisation to move forward towards compliance with the ISO45001 Standard.
A total of 50 people leaders were invited to represent all portfolios from across the organisation. A total of 9 workshops where conducted with 39 participants attending, which represents a 78% participation rate. Participants were selected from the following management/leader levels across the organisation: Executive Director, Director, Manager, Operational Support, Team Leader, HR, OD, and Safety.
The data from all nine workshops was collated and a detailed analysis using the KFLA™ global competency framework technical manual was undertaken. The results then formed the foundation of the strategy to develop and achieve capability uplift of the HSW Leaders across the organisation and move towards compliance on the Safety Journey Continuum.
LTP Consulting working in collaboration with The Big Canvas and the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Manager developed a series of online training modules and introduced the concept of planned and unplanned Safety WALCs to support the development of the organisation's leaders to become visible HSW leaders.
Augmented Reality has been embedded into 'just in time' learning tools, to support learning transfer as leaders undertake KPI embedded Safety WALCs. The 'K' in walk has been changed to a 'C' to emphasis the importance of connecting with employees to support their wellbeing during the interaction.
The Safety WALC acronym stands for:
W: Wellbeing
A: Ask questions
L: Listen and learn
C: Connect
In addition, LTP Consulting is working to develop a 'Safety Leaders' Toolkit' with additional sets of ‘just in time’ safety tools and resources to support the capability uplift of the organisation's HSW leaders.
Tools and resources being developed:
-
Safety WALC topic cards
-
Hazard Management
-
Stop for Safety
-
Incident Investigation
-
Dangerous substances
-
Team Talks and topics
-
Explaining the Safety Triangle
-

-

To ensure a consistent approach is achieved the organisation's Change Management Methodology the ‘Make it’ series is being used by the HSW Team to achieve uplift in both Change Management and HSW Leader capability.
